Beale Memorial Clock Tower – Kern County Museum, Bakersfield, California
Standing proudly on the grounds of the Kern County Museum, the Beale Memorial Clock Tower is one of Bakersfield’s most recognizable historic landmarks. Originally built in 1904 as a tribute to Mary Edwards Beale, the tower was commissioned by her son, Truxtun Beale, a prominent figure in California history.
The original structure once stood in the middle of downtown Bakersfield at Chester Avenue and 17th Street, serving as both a symbol of civic pride and a centerpiece of daily life. Over time, it became a beloved landmark for locals, even surviving early plans to remove it as the city grew.
In 1952, a powerful earthquake severely damaged the tower, leading to its demolition. However, its story didn’t end there. Important elements of the original structure—including the clock works, bell, and iron details—were preserved and later incorporated into a faithful reconstruction.
In 1964, the tower was reborn at its current location at the Kern County Museum, where it continues to stand as a tribute to Bakersfield’s rich past. Today, it remains a symbol of resilience, history, and the enduring spirit of the community.
This piece captures that timeless presence—where history, architecture, and California heritage come together under the shade of towering palms.
